The Future is 5G

The future is now. It may seem like just yesterday we made the switch from 3G to 4G, but the expansion to 5G is already upon us. Ericcson CTO, Glenn Laxdal recently opened his session at AT&T’s “Road to 5G” conference by highlighting the projected growth of IoT to reach 29 billion connected devices by 2022.  With more and more devices coming online, the move to 5G in order to meet the all time high demand for data is eminent.

5G Technology

The next generation of wireless networks will be supported by technology previously used for satellites and radars – millimeter waves.  Millimeter waves are much shorter than the radio waves used for smartphones today. This technology, combined with small cells, promises to take download speeds from minutes down to seconds. Although, expect some limitations as millimeter waves do not travel through buildings well and are prone to getting trapped by plants and rain.

Increased Efficiencies

The expansion to 5G is expected to help improve coverage for rural communities currently relying on antiquated dial-up or spotty 4G satellite service.  Additionally, the high and low frequencies are ideal for a wide range of applications including machine to machine communication, fleet management, smart agriculture networks, virtual and augmented reality and more.

5G is expected to reach consumers as early as 2020, however, you will need 5G compatible equipment if you want to reap the benefits right off the bat.
